Dark Side of Nude Make-Up

Topshop have done it again when it comes to the gothic trend this AW12 and released a glamourous capsule make-up collection that gives a "high shine and high impact look", inspired by on-screen heroines like Ingrid Bergman and Natalie Portman.
I am seriously craving the Wicked lipstick, which is a dark plummy red colour and applies with a brilliant matte coverage, and the fabulously golden, glittery Stardust nail polish.
If you've got great skin this is definitely the look for you; pale, dewy skin, delicately coloured cheekbones and mushroom eyeshadows.
If you go to Topshop now you can pick up the cute little 'Get the Look' postcard-style pack for free from the tills which give you some ideas on how to best use the collection.

FASH/ON FILM: William Tempest for River Island

William Tempest's exclusive collection for River Island Design Forum debuted at London Fashion Week but officially launched yesterday, with the opportunity to win certain items from the range simply by retweeting on the River Island Twitter page
Available in selected stores and online the range was showcased in a short film as part of the Fash/On Film initiative that runs in conjunction with the British Fashion Council.
At the Fash/On Film event, editors, models and film makers alike congregated to watch the offerings. The mesmerising movement and music sucks you in to the model's journey and the clothes are totally flapper girl; glitzy and glamourous, with a wearable modern twist.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills: Season 3 Premiere

Oh yes, they're back.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills attended the season 3 premiere last night in true housewife style. I'm excited to see what totally-blown-out-of-proportion events will occur this season, and I'm especially excited to see how new housewife and model Yolanda Foster (third from the left) fares!
Camille Grammer has left the line up which is a shame because she turned out to be really lovely in season 2 and she's the only one who's really not afraid of speaking her mind...
Camille definitely stole the spotlight at the premiere in her amazing red Herve Leger dress, heels and Alexander McQueen clutch.
Season 3 is due to start in November.

Ombre Nails

Although ombre is a trend that was more 'in' in SS12 I am still loving the ombre style dip-dyed hair and how this trend has translated in to the world of beauty too.

Why not have a crack at ombre nails? I am loving these impossible gradients with pastel colours and glitters. All you need is a few colours, a nail sponge to apply the second colour and some precision and patience!
In short, you do the base colour, let it dry and then sponge on the tip colour trying your best to blend the colours as neatly as you can.
Try blending oxblood or a rich aubergine colour with black to stay on trend with this seasons gothic edge, or more neutral colours and glamourous glitters to keep it sophisticated.
You can also try ombre nails fading gradually from one nail to the next (like below), which might better suit someone who wants to get the look but doesn't have the time, and anyone who has a huge nail polish collection!

Tim Walker: Story Teller

The incredibly talented fashion photographer Tim Walker celebrated the opening of his new exhibition "Story Teller" at Somerset House last night.
The exhibition runs until the 27th January 2013 and the opening enticed a wonderful crowd: from Kate Moss to Bonnie Wright, and Tim Burton to Cara Delevingne
The exhibition mainly houses a selection of props and photographs from shoots for Vogue, Vanity Fair and many other top fashion publications.

There will also be a series of related events showing and debating the influence films such as The Wizard of Oz have had on Walker's work.

Find out more about the exhibition here.

Spacex Review: John Court Exhibition

You may remember that a few months ago, when I first started LIQUORICE, I reviewed the exhibition that was currently showing at Spacex, an independent art gallery in Exeter where I volunteer in my free time.
You can read my review of that Michael Samuels exhibition here. This is my second review of the new exhibition of art work showing until the 24th November 2012; John Court's first solo UK exhibition, 'The Work Between the Lines'.

John Court is severely dyslexic and uses his art to explore this; turning something two dimensional like stenciled letters, in to a pattern, and then in to a sort of sculptural, braille-like, tactile piece of art. He is changing something that he finds difficult to understand in to something he can comprehend easily, whilst exploring and working through issues with his own dyslexia. You are invited to touch and play with some of the pieces of art work, which adds another dimension to the viewing experience.

The dedication Court puts in to his art work is phenomenal. He spends hundreds of hours on each piece, which gives way to the sense of discipline there is behind all of this and leads nicely in to his performance art. Court will be performing a specially commissioned piece similar to his famous 'Standing up for 8 hours' at Spacex on the 24th of November, to mark the closing of the exhibition. These performances can be interpreted literally as the marking of time, and push Court beyond technique and exhaustion. Not to be missed!

Chanel's Little Black Jacket

The iconic, timeless Chanel, currently run by Karl Lagerfeld, has opened an exhibition of a series of photos of that classic little black jacket, at the Saatchi Gallery in London. It opened on the 12th of October and is another little bit of fashion in the UK that you won't want to miss. Vogue posted a few sneak peek photos from the exhibit from which I am sharing my favourites with you here on LIQUORICE: you can see the full article here. The exhibition contains over 100 beautiful black and white photos of everyone from Alexa Chung to Kanye West taken by the fabulously controversial Karl Lagerfeld himself.

What do you think? Will you be going to see the exhibition?

Brad Pitt for Chanel N°5

Yesterday Chanel announced on their Twitter that they had released a new advertisement for Chanel N°5 starring Brad Pitt! Expecting a new, dreamy, provencial "Audrey Tautou"-esque appearance I was excited to see it: but very disappointed! The pseudo-philosophical script is overplayed and Brad Pitt is not looking that hot anymore (get a hair cut!)! My favourite part is (and I'm not joking) the end, with the image of the sparkling night cities on Earth and the classic bottle overlayed.

What do you think? Is it a load of crap or Chanel genius (I mean, I am blogging about it...)?

AW12 Inspiration

I don't know about you but I find I've grown tired of this seasons big trends already (pleather, khaki, oxblood...be gone!) and I'm lacking inspiration for my retail therapy as my taste gets more expensive and my bank balance more and more unhealthy...!
Needing some new inspiration, and quickly, as the weather has got noticeably colder in the last few days I have started to take a shine to the more tactile trends this AW! Think peach fuzz jumpers, soft woven wool coats, smooth metallics, perfect suede, and pattern and colour galore. This is what my winter wardrobe needs!
I'm thinking...midi and maxi skirts, trench coats, studded gloves, big hats, patterned suits, colour blocking, black and gold baroque-style dresses...
It's all about covering up to keep cool, and keeping it fresh in the dark winter months with a splash of colour here and there...!

Just take a look at this beautiful patterned Miu Miu suit above (paired with clashing shirt and silk scarf), this pink, grey and teal crepe, boucle and sateen coat from Antonio Berardi and this leg-warming Just Cavalli maxi skirt.

Reiss October

Check out Reiss' new fashion feature "The Shape of Things to Come" on their beautiful coats and jackets here! Whether you're looking for something baggy to snuggle up in, like this seasons big trend, the cocoon coat, or something silhouette defining, Reiss has what you need! I'm still on the hunt for a coat but I've absolutely fallen in love with this Saint Laurent style hat...it's on my to-buy list!

Artist Feature: Bianca Green

You may have seen Bianca Green's "These Diamonds Are Forever" print (second from the left) adorning Urban Outfitters windows in recent months, or perhaps you've seen her designs on a beautiful bedspread, on a phone case, or a print on a decorated wall!
I love the amazing combinations of colour Bianca uses in her work. You can see how much fun she has creating these designs, and how much her broad understanding of cultures all around the world has influenced them! To celebrate the launch of her fabric line I did an interview with Bianca to find out more about her, and her work!

How did you get in to design?
It literally happened over night. I took off to live in Uruguay. To find out who I am, what I wanted and most importantly, what I didn't want in life. So there I was, so much inspiration and so much time. I started to create. My only intention was to fill my day with something I enjoyed doing and that would make me happy. And it did! Then I was telling my friend about all this creative venting, and she wanted to see. So I posted some of my works on my blog.. and from there, the stone started to roll and became bigger and bigger.. I think when you don't plan an outcome to something, it can turn out to be the best thing you ever did.

What inspired your bold and colourful designs?
Mostly my family background. Born in Brazil, raised in Germany and a few thousand miles of travel later, I had so much inspiration in me I would have exploded if not put into work! My art pretty much represents me: loud, happy, bold, colourful, old, new... everything you see is a part of me.

How important is colour in your work?
It always depends. I have a few pieces that aren't drowning in color like some others...it changes with what I am trying to express. But in general, I have to have colours in my life. In my food, in my Interiors, the people around me and of course my clothing. Today I wore a blue patterned hippie dress with blue tights, multi colored shoes, a sky blue cardigan and a heavy patterned jacket on top. Compared to all the grey, black and brown that people were wearing out there, I looked like I came sliding down a rainbow! But I don't mind. :)

And what is the reason you use so much pattern?
Probably because of all the passions I have: interior designs, fabric design, vintage wallpaper, nature and the love for shapes in general. I just believe in combining beautiful things to get something that's even more beautiful. Like people: if you get the right mix of people together, your dinner will be much more exciting than eating alone.

What's on your desk right now?
Besides too many emails? A lot of ideas and projects! You would never think that but lately I have been spending more time on administrative stuff than creating...So I am hoping to switch that around soon. As a constant traveler, I am thinking about doing something that might help me find my way...we will see.

Who or what inspires you the most with regards to designing prints and pieces?
I find inspiration everywhere really. In daily life, in movies, in sound, in people. I like to observe situations and people. I do that a lot when I travel. Like on my trip to Helsinki; the people there are so creative, artistic and are not afraid to wear bold colors and patterns. I also get a lot of ideas from interior design and fashion photography. Sometimes you see a picture of a person sitting in front of a wall; but the way his shirt, hair and the structure of the wall work together is what helps to create a vision in my head.

Where can we find some reviews of your work?
There are a lot of lovely features about me and my work online. If you put Bianca Green Art in your favorite search engine you will find a few. But the ones I prefer the most normally don't include any words. A picture of my product in the hands of a happy customer. Those are priceless!

Tell us more about your fabric collection and why you decided to release a fabric collection.
Oh, that was one exciting project! Like I mentioned before, I am very much into interior designs. So one day I wanted to have one of my designs on fabric for these vintage chairs I bought. I found Spoonflower and uploaded one design first. After holding a sample in my hands I freaked out (in a good way!) and did nothing but fabric designs for the next 2 weeks. It's a completely different thing to see your artwork on a piece of paper, on an iPhone case or on fabric. So mainly I created the collection for myself and for my future projects, but the nice side effect is that people can buy them too and get creative. They have been making beautiful things from curtains, dresses, pillows to purses!

Where do you hope to be in 5 years time?
Home - wherever that might be, Happy - with what I am doing, Blessed - to have lovely people to share life with, and Curious - always trying out new things and going on new adventures.

Valentino: Master of Couture

Somerset House will be holding an exhibition at the Embankment Galleries of a collection of Valentino's finest couture designs, from the 29th of November to the 3rd of March, 2013 to celebrate over 50 years of design from 'the master of couture'. Showcasing over 130 dresses and designs worn by celebrities from Grace Kelly to Gwyneth Paltrow, this is not to be missed.

The exhibition will be staged in 3 sections; the first delivering an intimate portrait of Valentino's life through photographs and specially commissioned films, the second reversing the role of the viewer and allowing them to walk the catwalk to view his designs in 3D, and the third displaying the painstaking processes that designers and couture-crafters go through sewing each stitch by hand. It looks to be an incredibly interesting exhibition and any Valentino-lover, or just fashion-lover in general, should be excited to see this!

There is also an exclusive style event to be held on the 30th of November where Valentino, along with Giancarlo Giammetti, will be in conversation with Colin McDowell exploring all aspects of Valentino's life and work. Unfortunately, this is sold out already! But I'm sure we will see a lot about this in the blogosphere!

Will you be visiting?!

Rose gold has definitely had it's moments of popularity over the past few years and it is back in fashions favour once again!

I also can't help but think about christmas already (it's only two months away!) and I can imagine this being a good alternative to the overdone reds, greens and golds on christmas day!

Topshop 'Witching Hour' Collection

"Fashion has taken an enchanting turn. Imagine a porcelain doll brought to life: dark, brooding and full of bewitching charm, swathed in ebony cobwebs and delicate touches of Victorian lace...think gothic come seductive and dangerously rich in haunting prowess...Welcome to the dark side. It's time to cast your sartorial magic - get ready to spellbind.-Topshop Witching Hour collection description.
Forever one of my high street favourites, Topshop have recently released a bewitching collection called 'Witching Hour' and I am loving the dark, gothic style. Bringing together all of this seasons best trends; baroque, gothic, black leather, lace, feathers, burgundy lipstick, and sequins, these pieces are perfect for a super stylish Halloween! Scary and hot! And the way the collection is themed makes it far too easy to style a great outfit!

Take a look at all my favourites below!
Leave a comment and let me know what you think, and what are you wearing for Halloween this year?!

Topshop lipstick in Hazard £8.00 - I actually have this lipstick and I love the colour, it's dark and rich enough to suit most skin tones from light to dark, cool to warm, gives great coverage and is a great addition to basic make-up on a night out or during the colder months to add some much needed colour to your complexion!

Topshop Aristocrat 6" High heel, velvet boots £90.00 - Black velvet! High heels! What more can I say?!

Topshop Sequin tube skirt £48.00 - This sequined pencil skirt is fabulous and the rich red colour is perfect for Autumn!

I would wear these three items together!

Trend: Graphic Jumpers

Jumpers are key for the colder months: for layering and for keeping warm.
When it comes to jumpers I'm a bit of a material snob and I hate spending more than a tenner on something that is made from synthetic fibres (unless it's a really nice item!). I much prefer a nice jumper in merino wool, angora or cashmere.
A big trend this season is animal print and animal embellished graphic jumpers, cardigans and tees. I've already seen a few of you out there in the blogosphere, that I follow, repping this trend but I've picked a few of my personal favourites to share with you all! All these jumpers are super versatile and could be styled with skinny jeans and a great pair of boots or a chic pencil skirt and quirky pumps or brogues. And they're all fairly priced and affordable too!

1 is the Aubin & Wills portland fox jumper made from lovely merino wool, £129.99 at Net-a-Porter
2 is the ASOS tiger jumper (also available in a monochrome colour scheme), £30.00 at ASOS,
3 is a plain sequined jumper made from synthetic fibres, with a beautiful bow detail at the back, £45.99 at Zara,
4 is the Illustrated People Antlers jumper made from 100% cotton, £50.00 at ASOS,
5 is the J. Crew French hen jumper made from a wool-blend, £95 at Net-a-Porter.

Retail Therapy #3

My search for a new winter boot is over!
The Alexy boot at Topshop is a full, smooth leather, Chelsea ankle boot with a hard sole. A four inch heel and platform allows the boot to be comfy and fashionable, and forever a classic in black.
I'm loving them and I bought a pair today, as you can see above! I'm finally one step closer to being ready for winter!
You can find the Alexy boot here.
What do you think? What boots are you wearing or loving this winter?

Anna Dello Russo for H&M

The Anna Dello Russo for H&M collaboration was released yesterday!
There was a lot of hype for this collaboration as Anna is well known for her bright and unusual personal style and designs, being named by some as 'the Lady Gaga of the fashion world'. The collection includes luggage, shoes and jewellery and ranges in price from £14.99 to £199.99.
I bookmarked the Anna Dello Russo page on the H&M website, checked it yesterday evening and almost everything is sold out so it's looking to be a big success!
Some stores are also stocking the AdR collab so try your luck there if you haven't been able to purchase anything from the range yet!
My favourite piece has to be this aqua blue hand bag with gold details:

PFW Favourites Part III

Welcome to part three, the final of my Paris Fashion Week favourites!
See parts one and two for Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, Tsumori Chisato, Rochas, Kenzo, Anthony Vacarello and Lanvin!

Chanel presented a simple, classic collection, with pearls, origami flower applique and stripes gallore. I loved the partially transparent hats and shoes, proving that it really is a big trend for SS13 (see my posts on the trend here and here)! Think strapless a-line dresses, chunky platforms and jackets.

Lydia Maurer's first collection for Paco Rabanne was cosmic and glittery with plentiful cut outs and figure flattering shapes. The whole collection was shimmering; including the bulky, jewel-adorned gladiator sandals and the plunging necklines.

Elie Saab was the show I was most looking forward to and I'm not disappointed! I was really impressed by the variety of designs; from simple taupe to multi-coloured bodycon, and Grecian-style to sparkling and classic. This collection for SS13 seems to have a little something for every occasion!
